Lisbeth Salander may be returning to the screen, but she won’t be portrayed by Rooney Mara.
The then-little-known-actress nabbed an Oscar nod for her performance in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” but Sony is eyeing a reboot of the franchise that’ll jettison Mara and her co-star Daniel Craig. David Fincher, too, is unlikely to return.
The studio is reportedly looking to next adapt the fourth book in the “Dragon Tattoo” series, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” — an installment best known for being the one not written by series author Stieg Larsson. “Spider’s Web” finds the feminist hacker vigilante Lisbeth and her journalist sidekick Mikael Blomkvist investigating a conspiracy involving spies, nefarious governments and cybercrime.
David Lagercrantz, the writer who penned “Spider’s Web,” has said of Lisbeth, “I saw her like Spiderman or Batman…. She was not just this great character. She also had this great background — this mythology — and I really felt that I wanted to develop it, dig into it.”
TheWrap reports that Alicia Vikander is an “early favorite” to play Lisbeth 2.0. Who would you cast for the reboot?
