Essence’s shorts competition is back, this time with a new theme: the modern black family.
The third iteration of the magazine’s contest for African-American women directors is seeking documentaries that are 20 minutes or less focusing on “how the modern day Black family looks, exists and grows in today’s society.”
The deadline for submissions is December 14, 2015.
The winner, selected by a panel of Essence editors and a panel of “industry tastemakers,” will be honored at the 9th annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon on February 25, 2016, and have an excerpt of her film exhibited at the event. She will also receive a $2,500 cash prize. Past honorees at the luncheon have included Oprah Winfrey, Lupita N’yongo, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Shonda Rhimes, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Taraji P. Henson.
