Former “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera has launched a new production company called Take Fountain. The Emmy-winning star of the upcoming NBC comedy “Superstore” signed an overall deal with ABC Studios, of which Take Fountain Productions is a part.
Gabrielle Neimand, former V.P. of Narrative Films at Participant Media, will run development and production at the company, which will develop new projects for cable and broadcast.
Take Fountain is moving full steam ahead, with two projects already sold.
“Plus One,” a single-cam comedy, went to ABC after a bidding war. The series focuses on three siblings who make a shocking discovery — there are actually four of them, and that the sibling they never knew existed is just like them, only better. The script will be written by Cuban-American writer Valentina Garza (“Bordertown,” “The Simpsons”), who will also exec produce with Ferrera and Neimand.
Meanwhile, the drama “Social Creatures” is headed to ABC Family, which is currently in the midst of being renamed Freeform. The series, centered on six young friends living fast-paced and tech-savvy lives in NYC, received a script commitment from the network. Take Fountain and Yellow Brick Road’s Teri Weinberg will exec produce the series with creator Ryan Piers Williams (“X/Y”), Ferrera’s husband.
Ferrera, who publicly identifies as a feminist, recently served as a judge in a competition to find The Next Female MacGyver. Take Fountain Productions seems like an excellent platform to give women opportunities both on screen and behind the scenes.
“Superstore” will debut mid-season in the 2015–16 television season. A premiere date hasn’t yet been set.
