Last year, women comprised just 5% of cinematographers in the top 250 grossing films — a paltry figure that actually marked an improvement from the 3% rate in 2013 and the 2% rate in 2012.

Here’s hoping that a change in leadership at the International Cinematographers Guild can spark advancement for women DPs. Rebecca Rhine, a veteran union leader and a former executive at the acting guild AFTRA*, will serve as the first female leader of the 7,700-member ICG. She will take over executive-director duties from Bruce Doering, who is retiring after three decades at the post.

The LA Times notes that the ICG represents cinematographers, camera operators, visual effects supervisors, film loaders and other camera crew workers.

Rhine previously managed a union for managers in San Francisco.

* AFTRA has since merged with SAG.
