Trailer Watch: Amazon’s Dystopian ‘The Man in the High Castle’ Imagines a Different Outcome of WWII

What would the U.S. be like had the Allied Powers lost World War II and the Nazis and the Japanese taken over? A new series from Amazon, “The Man in the High Castle,” imagines exactly that dystopian counter-history.

Based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick, “The Man in the High Castle” centers on Juliana Crain (Alexa Davalos, “Clash of the Titans”), who is first introduced in the trailer as a paragon of both strength and skill. By the end of the clip, however, the budding martial artist is being pursued by incredibly powerful people who want her dead after she’s accused of treason.

So how did we get from point A to B? Juliana’s half-sister Trudy (Conor Leslie, “The Blacklist”) urgently passes a mysterious film reel to her, footage she claims is “a way out” before running away. Trudy is then shot and killed by Japanese secret police.

Juliana’s life will never be the same after watching the video. She won’t be dissuaded from following her late sister’s leads despite the dangers (and threats) of probing further. “I need answers and I’m not leaving until I get them,” she resolves.

The pilot for “The Man in the High Castle” debuted in January earlier this year as part of Amazon’s pilot season of 2015. It is the most-watched pilot since the streaming service launched its original series development program.

You can catch the first season on Amazon Prime November 20.
