TIFF 2015 Women Directors: Meet Anne Èmond — ‘Our Loved Ones’

Anne Èmond is a Montreal-based filmmaker. She has written and directed many short films, including “Naissances” and “Sophie Lavoie.” Her first feature, “Nuit #1,” earned Émond the Jutra Award for a first-time feature filmmaker. (Press materials)

“Our Loves Ones,” or “Les Êtres Cher,” will premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival on September 16.

W&H: Please give us your description of the film playing.

AE: In 1978, Guy Leblanc dies tragically in a small village in the province of Quebec. The real cause of his death remains a mystery for most of his family. Years later, his son David, now a loving father of two children, secretly carries the weight of that tragedy, as must David’s daughter, Laurence, with her own reaction to her father’s suffering.

W&H: What drew you to this story?

AE: It’s a very personal story about people really near to me. I always knew I would make this movie one day; I felt I had to talk about this subject. Somehow, I had the feeling that it was a universal family story — that anyone could recognize themselves in the film.

W&H: What advice do you have for other female directors?

AE: My advice is the same for any young filmmaker, male or female: Trust yourself, work hard, watch films, read books, listen to music, drink wine and do sports!

W&H: How did you get your film funded? Share some insights into how you got the film made.

AE: I am from Quebec. My film was mostly funded by Canadian public funds. I’m lucky. I hope my province will continue to support culture.

W&H: Name your favorite woman-directed film and why.

AE: There are so many! Today it would be “After the Wedding” by Susanne Bier.
