New ‘Mary Poppins’ Movie Being Developed By Disney

Mary Poppins is set to teach a whole new generation of children the power of imagination. Disney is reportedly developing a “Mary Poppins” sequel (of sorts), set about 20 years after the original story told in the 1964 film. Unless time travel is suddenly a part of the “Poppins” universe, we assume this means the 79-year-old Julie Andews and the 89-year-old Dick Van Dyke won’t star, though it’d be nice to see them appear in cameos.

The movie will be based, at least in part, on P.L. Travers’ book series. The original film, the making of which was documented in 2013’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” was based on the first of eight books.

It’s worth noting that the creative team behind this female-centric story — the director, writer, producers and songwriters — will be comprised exclusively of men. The original “Mary Poppins” was, too — but that was half a century ago. If only Poppins could swoop down from the sky with her magical umbrella and teach them a thing or two — maybe with a song — about gender equality.
