Hannah Fidell’s “The Long Dumb Road’ Acquired by Universal Pics Group

“The Long Dumb Road”

Hannah Fidell’s latest film has found a home. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group snagged the North American rights to “The Long Dumb Road,” Deadline reports. The road trip comedy made its world premiere at Sundance in January.

Co-written and directed by Fidell, the pic follows a college-bound teen (Tony Revolori, “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) who offers a thirtysomething mechanic (Jason Mantzoukas, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) a ride during a stop-over in Texas. The unlikely pair share little in common but are both at personal crossroads and find themselves bonding as they travel through the American Southwest.

A day-and-date theatrical and VOD release is planned for November.

“6 Years” and “A Teacher” are among Fidell’s previous features. “It’s been my experience that the indie/festival world is very female-director friendly. It’s those higher-budgeted projects where it seems to be harder to break through,” she told us. The writer-director added, “Even though this will come off sounding a little ridiculous since both ‘A Teacher’ and ‘6 Years’ are
relationship dramas, I wish more movies by women weren’t love stories.”

Fidell served as a producer on “The Long Dumb Road.” The pic was financed by Gamechanger Films, which invests in narrative features helmed by women.
