Trailer Watch: A Woman is Betrayed by Her Husband and Friend in Cannes Pic “One Day”

“One Day”

The trailer for “One Day” (“Egy Nap”) sees Anna (Zsófia Szamosi) carting her kids around to school and various activities, doing some grocery shopping, comforting her crying toddler, and scarfing down some food when she has a rare spare moment. Everything seems fine — incredibly busy, but fine. She’s living what seems to be a perfectly average life, but a couple of conversations in the clip suggest that a son who forgets to do his homework is actually the least of Anna’s worries.

Anna’s husband has been having an emotional affair with her friend. “We didn’t sleep together. Nothing happened,” Anna’s hubby tells her defensively. Her friend, meanwhile, is more apologetic: “We met a few times. Sent stupid texts. Forgive me,” she begs.

But Anna doesn’t have time to dwell on the betrayal. She still has to get through her jam-packed day.

Director Zsófia Szilágyi has described “One Day” as a “matrimonial thriller.” “I wanted to show moments that you don’t usually see on film. When you read in a script: ‘And they leave the house.’ How does that work when you have three children? I wanted to restore these details that are usually overlooked in films, for the purpose of dramatic tension,” she explained. “Time is of the essence for the couple I direct since they don’t have a lot of it. The time they have is usually part of the routine.”

“One Day” marks the Hungarian filmmaker’s feature directorial debut. She wrote the script with Réka Mán-Várhegyi. The drama has been selected for Cannes’ Critics’ Week sidebar, and is set to premiere May 9. No word on distribution or a theatrical release yet.
