Kathleen Turner and Deborah Cox have signed on to star in an off-Broadway play about a lesbian couple in which one of them begins to question her gender identity and contemplate sex-reassignment surgery.
In “Would You Still Love Me If…,” the Oscar- and Tony-nominated Turner will play the mother of the potentially transgender character. Cox, best known as a R&B singer and the star of “Aida” on Broadway, will co-star as a surgeon. Rebecca Brooksher and Sofia Jean Gomez will play the central couple.
Playwright John S. Anastasi told the NY Times how he struck upon the inspiration for his drama. “About a year ago, I was down in the Village, and I went to see ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color,’” he said. “I was moved by the relationship of these two women, and was pondering if there was anything that could change their love. For some reason, it crossed my mind — what if one of them decided they wanted to physically change. That was the germ of the idea.”
Directed by Nona Gerard, the play will begin previews on September 26 and officially open on October 10 at New World Stages.
