Angela Robinson is set to receive a major honor at the 2018 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival. The “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” writer-director will take home the Achievement Award, the fest’s most prestigious prize. A press release announced the news.

Given in recognition of “a body of work that has made a significant contribution to LGBT film and media,” the award’s previous recipients include “Boys Don’t Cry” co-writer and director Kimberly Peirce, “Desert Hearts” helmer Donna Deitch, and “Glee” alumna Jane Lynch.

Inspired by true events, 2017’s “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” tells the story of “Wonder Woman” creator Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and the women who inspired the iconic character: his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and the married couple’s lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote). The drama sees William, Elizabeth, and Olive fighting to bring the powerful heroine to the masses  —  and fighting for their right to have an unconventional relationship.

Robinson’s other credits include “True Blood,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” and “D.E.B.S.”

“Outfest has a long and important legacy of launching filmmakers careers. I am incredibly proud that we have the opportunity to honor an amazingly talented woman director whose career started at Outfest,” said Christopher Racster, Outfest’s Executive Director. “Angela has forged a unique path of success within the industry. When jobs are hard to come by for women directors, Angela has blazed a path in high-profile television series, lauded independent films, and major studio movies. Her unique vision, her sharp humor, and her humanity are constantly on display in each move she makes. Angela’s work is always fresh, intelligent, and groundbreaking.”

Robinson added, “It is such an honor to receive the Outfest Achievement Award this year — I premiered the first short film I ever made at Outfest and every film I’ve made since. It’s a joy to be recognized by Outfest in this way so many years later.”

Up next for Robinson is an adaptation of “Strangers in Paradise,” an award-winning comic book about best friends in a love triangle.

Outfest will be held July 12-22. Women-directed films screening at this year’s fest include Desiree Akhavan’s “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” a coming-of-age story about a teen who gets sent to gay conversion camp, and Anne Fontaine’s “Reinventing Marvin,” a drama about a boy who leaves his rural French village behind to escape homophobic bullies and attend theater school.
