Trailer Watch: Alison Brie Learns About Masturbation in Dirty Rom Com ‘Sleeping with Other People’

Lainey (Alison Brie) is a serial cheater and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) is a sex addict. While they aren’t, shall we say, an ideal match, the red-band trailer for writer-director Leslye Headland’s “Sleeping with Other People” proves that Lainey and Jake’s chemistry is undeniable — and quite possibly combustible.

More than a decade after making their sexual debuts with each other in college, Lainey and Jake reunite under unlikely — and decidedly unromantic — circumstances: a support-group meeting for sex addicts, where topics like photographing buttholes is fair game.

The twosome develop a close friendship, but according to Jake’s friends, he really just wants in her pants. So what’s the hesitation for acting on what’s clearly a mutual attraction? “When you start sleeping with people,” Jake explains, “you risk losing them. I’ve never slept with someone I wasn’t willing to lose.”

This new adult cut of the trailer includes more explicitly sexual content, including a discussion of Lainey’s favorite sex position. And after Lainey admits that she hasn’t had an orgasm in a year, Jake lends a helping hand — metaphorically speaking — by giving her tips about how to masturbate, hilariously comparing the process to “scratching a record.”

“What I’ve been so glad to hear from people who have seen the film is that they relate to it and the characters 100%,” Headland told Women and Hollywood. She continued, “I want people to understand and recognize that when it comes to dating, you’re not as crazy as you think you are. Everyone needs love. We need it like air or water. We just don’t know how to get it.”

Find out if Lainey and Jake figure out how to get what they need — and whether or not they can get it from each other — when “Sleeping with Other People” opens September 11.
