Trailer Watch: True Adulthood Threatens Taissa Farmiga’s Relationship in Hannah Fidell’s ‘6 Years’

Writer-director Hannah Fidell made a splash at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival with “A Teacher,” a dark portrait of a twentysomething teacher desperate to continue her affair with a teenage boy.

Fidell is now back with her follow-up. Starring acting wunderkind Taissa Farmiga, the improv-based “6 Years” centers on two college students — one on the verge of graduation — who find their long-ish relationship challenged by everyone around them. “Don’t you ever feel like you’re missing out?” they inquire. “Does that mean she’s the only girl you’ve ever had sex with?” he’s asked. Ah, your early twenties, when your sex life was everyone else’s business.

“Mark Duplass called me up and asked if I wanted
to do a film about a co-dependent, abusive relationship between a young couple,” said Fidell in an interview with Women and Hollywood. “I love fucked-up relationship dramas (see: ‘A Teacher’), so the challenge of
writing a film that was both relatable but also subversive was what initially
piqued my interest.”

The director added, “I want the young folks who see it to be able to relate to
it in real time, and older viewers to reminisce about that terrifying time
before college ends and true adulthood begins, when the world is yours and
everything and anything is a possibility. “

“6 Years” opens on demand only on August 18.
