Trailer Watch: A Girl Decides to Live as a Warrior in “I Kill Giants”

“I Kill Giants”: RLJE Films

“There are times when you have to ask yourself: Do I want to live my life as a coward or a warrior?” says a teen girl who’s embraced life as the latter in a new trailer for “I Kill Giants.” The fantasy film sees the line between imagination and reality blurring for Barbara (Madison Wolfe, “The Conjuring 2”) and her loved ones. The social pariah escapes the harsh realities of being bullied at school by committing herself to a magical world where she’s a hero — a world where she finds, hunts, and kills giants.

Barbara’s passion seems to cause her school counselor (Zoe Saldana, “Guardians of the Galaxy”) and others concern. The teen isn’t lacking in self-awareness. “I know that no one likes me. I know that everything I do looks crazy,” she acknowledges. But she doesn’t let that judgement stop her, because she’s convinced it’s up to her to save her town from giants and the threat they pose.

As Barbara explains, “A giant comes to a place and takes everything from you, and when its done, it’s like anything that made your life good was never even there.” Based on the trailer it’s unclear if there are actual, literal giants and people are wrong to doubt Barbara, or if the giants are meant to symbolize depression, as the teen’s description could suggest.

Inspired by the comic of the same name, “I Kill Giants” hits theaters and VOD March 23. Imogen Poots (“Green Room” ) and Sydney Wade (“Wolfblood”) co-star.
