Netflix to Launch Live-Action Tween Series about Science-Skilled Spy Girls

Children’s programming is a major if under-discussed part of Netflix’s plan for streaming domination. At least 70 kids’ shows were viewed by 2 million subscribers last year, revealed the notoriously circumspect company, while more than a dozen children’s series were viewed by at least 5 million of Netflix’s 35 million subscribers. (At least with Netflix shows, parents won’t have to worry about commercials about junk food airing every five minutes.)

Next month, Netflix will add to its original programming roster a live-action spy series aimed at tweens about science- and tech-savvy girls called “Project Mc2.” Per children’s programming tradition, the show will be based on a pre-existing toy line by the same name — this one about encouraging girls to get into STEM topics.

Here’s Netflix’s description of the show: “’Project Mc²’ follows four super-smart and science-skilled girls as they are recruited to join the spy organization, NOV8 (“Innovate”), and work together to save the day. … ‘Project Mc²’ shows that Smart is the New Cool(TM) incorporating S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) in a fun way and depicting smart girls, that viewers can relate to, throughout the series.”

“Project Mc2” will become available worldwide on August 7.
