‘Empire’ Creator Lee Daniels Developing Drama About Girl Band

Following the mega-success of “Empire,” Fox has bought another series from writer-director Lee Daniels: a drama about the tensions within a cobbled-together girl band.

The Atlanta-set “Star” will center on the three women in a band and will ask the question, What do you do to rise to the top of a cutthroat industry like the music business? According to Fox execs, Daniels has in mind “everything from ‘Dreamgirls’ to modern-day girl
groups that are manufactured.” They are put together, they don’t have an
organic reason to be together,” the network added. “That setup lends to a
great soap-operatic storytelling machine.”

In the meantime, “Empire,” which is created by Daniels and Danny Strong and showrun by Ilene Chaiken, returns September 23.
