Cate Blanchett will go behind the camera for the first time with the Australian TV series “Stateless,” a drama she also developed.
The prestige project is based on the experiences of Cornelia Rau, a mentally ill German citizen and Aussie resident who, after fleeing a cult, was unlawfully held by the Australian government for 10 months in 2004 and 2005 as a suspected illegal immigrant.
Elise McCredie will pen the script. Focusing on “identity, belonging and the extraordinary lengths people will go to find their place in the world,” the drama has been announced in the midst of national political conversations about immigration in Australia.
It is unknown whether Blanchett will appear in the series and/or when it will air. The Oscar-winning actress previously directed the stage productions “Blackbird” and “The Year of Magical Thinking” while Co-Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company with her husband Andrew Upton.
