Jennifer Lawrence finds herself being used as a weapon in a global struggle for power in a new trailer for “Red Sparrow.” The Oscar winner plays Dominika, a Russian ballerina who suffers a career-ending injury and is manipulated into becoming a recruit for a secret intelligence service. She’s given a choice: she can join the Sparrow School — where she’ll be taught to use her body and mind as weapons — or die. Not much of a choice, especially when you realize that becoming a Sparrow is predicated on losing her identity.
“When we are finished with you the person you were will no longer exist,” Dominika and the other recruits are told by a trainer (Charlotte Rampling). They “must learn to push [themselves] beyond all limitation,” and are forced to endure torture.
Dominka excels as a Sparrow, but she doesn’t seem to embrace her new role as an instrument serving someone else’s agenda. “You only matter because of what you can do for them,” an American CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) warns her. He offers to work together to “make these men pay” for what they’ve done to her and others.
“Red Sparrow” drops March 2. The thriller re-teams Lawrence with “Hunger Games” director Francis Lawrence.
