Films About Women Opening This Week

Madame Bovary — Directed and Co-Written by Sophie Barthes (Also available on VOD)

Set in Normandy, France, this is the classic story of Emma Bovary (Mia Wasikowska), a young beauty who impulsively marries small-town doctor Charles Bovary (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) to leave her father’s pig farm far behind. But after being introduced to the glamorous world of high society, she soon becomes bored with her stodgy husband and mundane life and seeks prestige and excitement outside the bonds of marriage. LA Slasher — Co-Written by Abigail Wright and Elizabeth Morris

A biting social satire of reality TV and the glorification of those who are “famous for being famous,” “LA Slasher” takes aim at the current state of the entertainment industry. Incensed by the tabloid culture that promotes this new breed of “celebrities,” the LA Slasher publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars, which leads the media and the general public to question if perhaps society is better off without them. Stars Mischa Barton. (Press Materials)

It’s Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong — Directed and Written by Emily Ting

In this sparkling romance, Ruby (Jamie Chung), a Chinese American toy designer from LA, visits Hong Kong for the first time on business. Finding herself stranded, she meets Josh (Bryan Greenberg), an American expat who shows her the city. Meandering through nighttime streets pulsing with energy and possibility, they fall into a winding and carefree conversation, buoyed by an undeniable attraction. As effervescent as a perfect first date, Emily Ting’s charming directorial debut takes full advantage of the chemistry of its leads, the playfulness of their exchanges and the magical landscape that is Hong Kong at night.
