Trailer Watch: A Brooklyn Musician Moves Back to the Midwest in LAFF Winner “Becks”

“Becks”: Blue Fox Entertainment

“Thanks for coming out. Now I know how Beyoncé feels. Beyoncé still lives with her mom, right?” a musician asks her very modestly sized audience in a new trailer for “Becks.” Becks (Lena Hall) doesn’t sell out arenas or make Gold records — she lives under her mom’s (Christine Lahti) roof and has a gig at her friend’s (Dan Fogler) bar. Single and broke, she’s reeling from a devastating breakup that saw her leaving Brooklyn behind for her hometown in the Midwest.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Becks shines during her sets, and it’s not long before she attracts an admirer, Elyse (Mena Suvari). It’s clear that the women are very into each other — but Elyse is also very married.

“Who’s it going to be next month?” her mom asks, pointing out that Becks was fixated on her ex just months ago.

“This story is loosely inspired by a very good friend of mine, Alyssa Robbins, whose music is used throughout the film,” writer-director Elizabeth Rohrbaugh (“The Perfect Victim”) told us. “She is a singer-songwriter and teacher who was going through a difficult breakup during a time that I was back in my hometown of St. Louis. She found herself back home with her mom and began touring through the Midwest performing her music at local bars and clubs.”

Rohrbaugh co-directed the pic with Daniel Powell (“Inside Amy Schumer”), and the pair penned the script along with Rebecca Drysdale (“Baskets”).

“Becks” took home the U.S. Fiction Award at The LA Film Festival. The film hits theaters and VOD February 9.
