Hollywood Feminist of the Day: Ethan Hawke Speaks Out Against “Movie Business [Being] a Boys Club”

During a press tour for his latest film, Ethan Hawke spoke out against the “boys club” that runs Hollywood.

Feminism appears to have little to do with the thriller “Good Kill,” but when asked by a Twitter user about his “Boyhood” co-star Patricia Arquette’s call for equal pay at the Oscars, Hawke took the opportunity to decry the “movie business [being] such a boys club.”

“Patricia is a brass tacks, old-school feminist, and I have so much respect for her,” he continued. “I think it’s about time. I mean, you know, she’s right.”

The actor added that, after a three-decade, forty-film career, he finally worked with a female director just this year, probably referring to “Ten Thousand Saints” helmer Shari Springer Berman. “And people think that this gender equality has happened,” he said.

Hawke also mentioned that, as the father of three daughters, “seeing the world through their eyes” helped him see things from a female point of view.
