Lucy Walker to Direct ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ Sequel

Oscar-nominated documentarian Lucy Walker (“The Crash Reel,” “Waste Land,” “Devil’s Playground”) will helm a follow-up film to “Buena Vista Social Club.”

The original Academy Award-nominated doc profiles a group of legendary Cuban musicians as they come together to record an album and play in a concert in the US. In “Buena Vista Social Club — Adios,” Walker will follow five of the original musicians as they embark on an ambitious tour and detail the highs and lows of their careers and lives since 1999, when the first film became a cultural sensation.

Walker commented, “The original ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ movie introduced the world to a group of fantastically charming and talented musicians who have inspired the world with their stories, hearts and music. Those are big shoes to fill and I am honored to follow in the footsteps of such a beloved, popular movie about such beloved, popular artists, and it’s especially fascinating during this important moment in Cuban history.”

“Adios” will begin shooting in July 2015 and is scheduled for a 2016 release.
