Trailer Watch: Hailee Steinfeld Kicks Ass in ‘Barely Lethal,’ Books Another Film

Hailee Steinfeld seems poised for stardom in the imminent future. The “Pitch Perfect 2” actress — and one-time Academy Award nominee — has a number of exciting projects set for release in 2015. She also recently signed on to star in “Break My Heart 1,000 Times,” a supernatural romantic thriller that sounds like it has the potential to be a big hit, especially among young female moviegoers.

Based on a YA novel of the same name, “Break My Heart 1,000 Times” takes place after a disastrous event damages the boundary between the our world and the next — the afterlife. A ghost-like presence known as “Remnant” delivers an alarming message to a girl (Steinfeld) who consequently embarks on an epic journey with epic consequences. The story is described as “The Fault In Our Stars” meets “The Sixth Sense.” A release date hasn’t been revealed.

In the meantime, you can catch your fill of Steinfeld in a new trailer for her action flick/teen movie fusion “Barely Lethal.”

Steinfeld plays Megan, an orphan who attends a special school dedicated to training its young students to kill. She is “the best assassin at the school. It’s only after she’s sent into the field that Megan discovers what she’s missing out on — a normal life. With that new goal in mind, Megan fakes her death and enrolls in Mission High School. “This is my way out,” she explains. Of course, the normal high-school experience turns out to be a battlefield in its own right.

This spot for “Barely Lethal” really emphasizes what a merciless battlefield it is, with Megan’s classmates engaging in not-so-clever wordplay about her being from Regina, Saskatchewan, and making her a viral sensation after she mistakes a group of peers playing a prank for dangerous captors and physically attacks them (while dressed as a mascot).

We get to see more of Jessica Alba and Sophie Turner (“Game of Thrones”) in this spot, both of whom play villains in the movie. If you’ve been waiting to see Sansa Stark unleash some violence, “Barely Lethal” may offer something of a catharsis, as this trailer shows Turner kicking, flipping, and wielding a knife.

“Barely Lethal” will make its way to theatres on May 29 and DirecTV on April 30.
