Trailer Watch: Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams Resume Their Forbidden Romance in “Disobedience”

“Disobedience”

Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams can’t put the past behind them in a new trailer for “Disobedience.” An adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name, the drama sees Weisz’s character, Ronit, returning to the Orthodox Jewish community she grew up in after her father, a revered rabbi, dies. She left the extremely religious enclave in London behind for a secular life in New York City.

While Ronit claims that she’s come back to honor her dad, it’s clear that she’s also taking advantage of the opportunity to be reunited with Esti (McAdams), a childhood friend with whom she shares a complicated history. “It’s insane that you’re here,” Esti, who is now married, says.

Already considered a black sheep in the community, Ronit causes an uproar when she and Esti rekindle their forbidden romance and are found out.

Weisz is among “Disobedience’s” producers. Rebecca Lenkiewicz (“Ida”) penned the screenplay alongside the film’s director, Sebastián Lelio (“Gloria”). The pic premiered to strong reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

Weisz won an Oscar in 2006 for “The Constant Gardener.” Her recent credits include “My Cousin Rachel,” “Denial,” and “The Lobster.” McAdams received an Oscar nod in 2016 for “Spotlight.” “Doctor Strange,” “True Detective,” and “Southpaw” are among her recent projects.

“Disobedience” hits theaters April 27.
