Actress-turned-director Emmanuelle Bercot will be the first female filmmaker to open the Cannes Film Festival in 28 years.
Bercot’s latest film, “La Tete haute,” will kick off the 2015 iteration of the festival, which will run from May 13 to 24.
Starring Catherine Deneuve, “La Tete haute” centers on a juvenile delinquent named Malony and his journey from ages 6 to 18. Deneuve plays a judge attempting to intervene in the youth’s life. The film marks the second collaboration between Deneuve and Bercot, who also directed the acting legend in the road-trip drama “On My Way.”
It is yet unclear whether “La Tete haute” will compete at the festival.
The last woman-directed film to open Cannes was Diane Kurys’ “A Man in Love” in 1987.
