Nova, Charley, and Ralph Angel Bordelon are back in the trailer for “Queen Sugar’s” third season — and they are still reeling from the events of Season 2. Each of the siblings is facing an uncertain future and trying to navigate, as Nova (Rutina Wesley) would say, a rigged game.
After writing a landmark article about her father, race, land, and legacy, Nova receives a book deal offer. She’s also considering leaving the newspaper she works for. Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) is determined to move on from his ex, while providing the best home he can for his son, Blue (Ethan Hutchison).
And Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is determined to bring down the racist, entitled Landry family — who have long controlled St. Josephine Parish’s sugar cane industry — by posing as their ally and going into business with them. By doing so she draws criticism from the community (“So this is you now? Tricking your own people into giving you their business?”) and faces sexual harassment from one of her new colleagues (“It feels bad having a secret like ours, don’t it? Feels a little dirty.”).
Like the previous two seasons, all episodes of “Queen Sugar” Season 3 will be woman-helmed.
Patricia Cardoso (“Real Women Have Curves”), Shaz Bennett (“Alaska Is a Drag”), Maria Govan (“Play the Devil”), and Lauren Wolkstein (“The Strange Ones”) are among the directors this season.
Created by “A Wrinkle in Time” director Ava DuVernay, “Queen Sugar” returns with a two-night premiere May 29 and 30. Subsequent episodes of the OWN drama will air Wednesday nights.
