Anne Frank’s story has been told countless times, but never quite like in Ari Folman’s upcoming animated film.
The Israeli director of “The Congress” and the Oscar-nominated “Waltz with Bashir” will retell the tragedy of and hope in Frank’s life with fantastical images, just as Folman did in his previous two works. Intriguingly, the protagonist of this film won’t be the famed Dutch teenager herself, but her imaginary friend Kitty.
Folman and producer Diana Elbaum have secured the rights to Frank’s book in all languages and media, as well as access to the entire Anne Frank archives, so formal playfulness is all but expected from the film. The untitled project will feature traditional animation set against stop-motion backdrops.
