AU.S. trailer has landed for Lynne Ramsay’s Joaquin Phoenix-starrer “You Were Never Really Here,” and it’s intense. “They said you were brutal,” a State Senator (Alex Manette) tells Joe (Phoenix). The politician isn’t looking for someone to dig up dirt on a rival — he’s looking for someone who is willing to do anything and everything to save his missing teenage daughter (Ekaterina Samsonov).
A veteran and former FBI agent, Joe is now a vigilante who tracks down missing girls. The senator’s daughter seems to be the victim of sex trafficking. And the senator doesn’t just want the men who abducted her brought to the police. “I want you to hurt them,” he says. If the trailer is any indication, Joe is indeed brutal and he does hurt them.
Ramsay took home the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes this year for “You Were Never Really Here.” Her other credits include “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “Ratcatcher.”
“You Were Never Really Here” hits select theaters April 6. The thriller, which is currently screening in some parts of Europe, just made Sight & Sound’s list of 2017’s 20 best films.
