Claire Underwood has finally made it to the White House. According to The New York Times, “House of Cards’” sixth season will center on Robin Wright’s character, who inherited the presidency after her husband resigned at the end of Season 5. Season 6, the series’ last, will consist of eight episodes.
When “House of Cards” premiered in 2013 Claire was presented as a political spouse who was just as ambitious and ruthless as her husband, Frank (Kevin Spacey). Throughout the series she evolved into a politician in her own right as she and Frank engaged in power struggles with their foes — and each other.
“We’re really excited about bringing some closure to the show for fans,” Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, stated. “We’re excited for the 370 people who make ‘House of Cards’ and have done the best work of their lives on that show; for the 2,000 people in Baltimore who have come to depend on that show for their jobs. And so we’re really excited that we were able to come to a good creative conclusion to the show.”
The fate of “House of Cards” had hung in the balance since Netflix severed ties with Spacey, who has been accused of sexual assault and misconduct by several parties. Shortly after the first allegation against Spacey was made Netflix announced that “House of Cards” would end after Season 6. Production on the series had been halted since October as Netflix reviewed the situation and considered its next move.
In 2016 Wright fought for — and apparently won — pay parity with Spacey. However, earlier this year news surfaced that she did not receive equal pay after all. Wright reportedly received $420K per episode, as compared to Spacey’s $500K. “I don’t think I’m getting paid the same amount,” Wright said. “I really don’t like being duped. It’s such a male-dominant workforce still. There’s a conditioning. And changing the condition of men is what needs to happen.”
Wright has received five consecutive Emmy nominations for portraying Claire. She won a Golden Globe for her performance in 2014. The actress’ recent screen credits include “Wonder Woman” and “Blade Runner 2049.”
