Trailer Watch: Lily James Reports on “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”

"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society"

For Juliet, writing is the “perfect job.” She gets to sit indoors and is “always near a teapot.” But the free spirit is desperate to write about “something serious” — and when she receives a letter from the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, she sees the opportunity to do just that. A new trailer has dropped for “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” and it sees Juliet, played by “Downton Abbey” alumna Lily James, following through on a lead that could lead to her most compelling story yet.

Juliet “forms a life-changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII,” the film’s synopsis details.

The trailer focuses on one member of the club in particular, Dawsey (Michiel Huisman, “The Age of Adaline”). “You are not what I expected,” he tells Juliet, clearly delighted by her. The pair’s chemistry is undeniable, but Juliet is already in a relationship and, by her own account, her “life is in London.”

“Darkest Hour,” “Baby Driver,” and “Cinderella” are among James’ big screen credits. She plays a younger version of Meryl Streep’s character in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” set to hit theaters July 20.

Based on Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’ novel of the same name, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” debuts on Netflix August 10.
