“Now you’re officially a disciple of God’s Promise,” Chloë Grace Moretz is told in a new trailer for Desiree Akhavan’s “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.” The reluctant disciple has been sent to the gay conversion camp after being caught with another girl in the backseat of a car on prom night. Lectured that they are “at an age when [they’re] especially vulnerable to evil,” Cameron and the rest of the campers are being taught to love God and hate themselves.
God’s Promise introduces Cameron to fellow sinners Jane (Sasha Lane, “American Honey”) an amputee stoner, and her friend, the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck, “The Revenant”). The trio bond over their mutual disdain for the camp’s leader (Jennifer Ehle, “Zero Dark Thirty”), a doctor whom Adam compares to a Disney villain who “won’t let you jerk off.”
It looks like Cameron and Co. won’t suffer silently. “I’m tired of feeling disgusted with myself,” we see Cameron announcing.
Written by Akhavan and Cecilia Frugiuele, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” took home Sundance’s Dramatic Grand Jury Prize in January. The frequent collaborators are set to co-write “The Bisexual,” a Hulu series about the dating experiences of a bisexual woman. Akhavan will direct and star in the comedy.
“The Miseducation of Cameron Post” marks Akhavan’s follow-up to her feature debut, 2014’s “Appropriate Behavior.” The pic hits select theaters August 3.
