Trailer Watch: Natalie Portman Embraces Her Supernatural Abilities in “Planetarium”

“Planetarium”

“Don’t expect to see a show — but to live an experience,” an audience is told before spiritualist sisters Laura (Natalie Portman) and Kate (Lily-Rose Depp, “Yoga Hosers”) take the stage in a new trailer for Rebecca Zlotowski’s “Planetarium.” The pair are believed to have the supernatural ability to connect with ghosts — a unique gift that a visionary film producer (Emmanuel Salinger, “Blood on the Docks”) hopes to capitalize on.

“What I can do is to make you famous on a very large scale,” André tells Laura. He insists that film is the only medium they can achieve this superstardom through. “We have been waiting for this grand fantasy movie for years,” he says.

Laura describes André as “an opportunity” to Kate. “I don’t shit money,” she explains to her younger sister. “Let’s enjoy it while it lasts.” But the trailer suggests the good times won’t last long. It seems as though the sisters’ intense, seemingly dysfunctional bond with the producer takes a toll on their own relationship. “You’re jealous,” Kate tells Laura, who responds by slapping her sister across the face.

“Planetarium” made its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival last September. The period drama hits select U.S. theaters August 11.
