Described as a “plea for the liberation of female sexuality in the 21st century,” “#Female Pleasure” tells the story of five women around the world fighting “for a self-determined female sexuality and an equal, sensual relationship between the sexes.” Variety debuted a new trailer for the documentary, which world premieres in Locarno’s Critics’ Week on August 5.
“We live in an environment where woman are constantly judged,” a character in the doc observes. Another adds, “As a woman in this world, I knew I was a threat.”
The women in the footage emphasize that controlling female sexuality — and portraying women as fodder for male fantasies — is a global issue, and patriarchy is thus a “universal religion.”
“Women need to remember that they actually own their bodies,” we’re told.
Director Barbara Miller (“Forbidden Voices”) explained that “#Female Pleasure” advocates for women “regardless of their culture and religion. It is not a film about these religions, and certainly not about faith,” she emphasized. “I want to show the universal, millennia-old and unfortunately still very topical structural demonization of the female body and their sexuality.”
The pic hits theaters in Germany and Austria November 8 and Switzerland November 15. No word on a U.S. release.
