Munich-born Lia Jaspers is the director of the documentaries Tar Dakar (2005), You Drive Me Crazy (2012), and Match Me! (2014). She lives and works as a freelance author and writer in Munich.

W&H: Please give us your
description of the film playing.

LJ: Match
Me! is about the quest for true love in modern times. It follows three people who believe that
others should decide [their romantic partners] for them because they feel no longer able to trust their
own guts.

W&H: What drew you to this
story?

LJ: I’m
always interested in stories about love and how people define what love is or
should be. It shocked me that my protagonists gave up on trusting their own feelings and their own instinct because of bad experiences. I
wanted to dig deeper.

W&H: What was the biggest
challenge in making the film?

LJ: To
gain the trust of my protagonists and to follow them in these sensitive moments
over a long period of time.

W&H: What do you want
people to think about when they are leaving the theater?

LJ: I
hope that they are open to get to the bottom of their own beliefs and to question
them.

W&H: What advice do you
have for other female directors?

LJ: I
want to encourage them to stick to their projects and never fear suffering a
setback. The most important thing is having a film team that is on your side no
matter what.

W&H: What’s the biggest misconception
about you and your work?

LJ: Maybe from the first impression that I pick “lighter” topics. [The might] not see the
deeper meaning…?

W&H: How did you get your
film funded?

LJ: It’s
my diploma film, which I did with the support of the Film Universitity HFF
München, the Bavarian Fimfound ( FFF), and the broadcasters BR and BR/ARTE.

W&H: Name your favorite women directed film and
why.
