Trailer Watch: Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett Get the Team Together in “Ocean’s 8”

“Ocean’s 8”

“It was a mistake,” Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) explains in her parole hearing. “But it happened. And, if I were to be released, I would just want the simple life.” In “Ocean’s 8,” the simple life apparently includes swiping a fur coat and suitcase immediately after getting out of prison, so that’s exactly what Debbie does.

Judging from the new trailer for the all-women reboot of the “Ocean’s” franchise, the simple life for Debbie also means reuniting with her best friend and partner in crime, Lou (Cate Blanchett), and organizing one mother of a heist.

“You’d need 20 people,” Lou insists when she hears Debbie’s plan. “Seven people,” corrects Debbie. So Debbie and Lou tap the talents of a jeweler (Mindy Kaling), a fashion designer (Helena Bonham Carter), a hacker (Rihanna), a pickpocket (Awkwafina), and a retired con (Sarah Paulson). Together, they’ll steal a $150 million necklace from socialite Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) at the Met Gala.

It’s a big job and one Debbie is hellbent on completing. “Why do you need to do this?” Lou asks her at one point. Without even thinking about it, Debbie replies, “Because it’s what I’m good at.”

“Ocean’s 8” is directed Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games”) from a script by Ross and Olivia Milch (the upcoming “Dude”) and hits theaters June 8. Check out the new trailer and poster below.
