“One Day at a Time” Co-Showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett Signs Deal with Sony TV

Gloria Calderon Kellett: Kellett’s Twitter account

If “this is it” for “One Day at a Time” co-showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett, then she must be having a ball. The co-creator and EP of the updated Norman Lear series has inked an overall deal with Sony Pictures TV, Deadline writes. The two-year agreement will see Kellett continue as exec producer and co-showrunner of the Justina Machado and Rita Moreno-toplined Netflix comedy. Kellett will also have the opportunity to develop and direct other projects for Sony via her production company, Big Girl Pants Pictures.

“One Day at a Time” — a modern reboot of Lear’s ’70s sitcom of the same name — centers on the Alvarezes, a Cuban-American family. Machado plays divorced veteran and single mom Penelope and Moreno portrays Penelope’s mother, Lydia. Isabella Gomez (“Matador”) and newcomer Marcel Ruiz star as Penelope’s kids, and Todd Grinnell (“Grace and Frankie”) plays the family’s friend and building manager, Schneider. Lear serves as an EP on the show alongside Kellett and co-creator/co-showrunner Mike Royce (“Everybody Loves Raymond”).

“Kellett pulled from her own life experience in shaping the show,” Deadline details. “Her parents immigrated to America from Cuba during Operation Peter Pan.”

The series’ first season, which debuted in January, has tackled subjects like PTSD, white privilege, and sexism. It will return for Season 2 in 2018.

Kellett cut her teeth writing on “How I Met Your Mother” from 2005 to 2007. She won an ALMA award for penning the episode “How I Met Everyone Else.” “Rules of Engagement,” “Devious Maids,” and “iZombie” are among her other credits.
