Cannes Film Festival sidebar Directors’ Fortnight is now accepting films for its 2019 edition. Organized by the French Directors’ Guild, next year’s Directors’ Fortnight will be held May 15-25.
The reduced-fee Early Bird registration period is open through December 31, 2018. Viewing materials must be received by January 31, 2019.
The regular registration period for feature-length films is January 1-March 29, 2019. Viewing materials must arrive April 7 at the latest.
For short or medium-length films, the registration and submission deadlines are the same: March 15, 2019.
This year just 25 percent of the Directors’ Fortnight films were directed or co-directed by women: Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s “Birds of Passage,” Arantxa Echevarria’s “Carmen & Lola,” Marie Monge’s “Treat Me Like Fire,” Debra Granik’s “Leave No Trace,” and Beatriz Seigner’s “Los Silencios.”
It’s likely more women filmmakers will be included in Directors’ Fortnight and Cannes overall in 2019. During this year’s edition, Cannes became the first film festival to sign the Gender Parity Pledge, which strives for better gender representation and transparency.
