Trailer Watch: A Man Robs a Bank for Love in the Documentary “The Dog”

Bonnie and Clyde might shame every other star-crossed bank robber with their unimpeachable glamour, but John Wojtowicz was determined to give their romance a run for its money.

Directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren’s new documentary profiles Wojtowicz’s 14-hour career as a bank robber — a desperate act he committed to help fund his lover’s gender-transition surgery. The 1972 stickup escalated into a day-long hostage situation — an event turned into the movie Dog Day Afternoon, with Wojtowicz played by Al Pacino.

“I consider myself a romantic,” Wojtowicz says in the trailer, which also recasts his crime as an act of Robin Hood heroism and an early milestone in the gay liberation movement.

The Dog opens August 8 in theaters and will be available as a VOD on August 15.
