Wendy and Lisa Win ASCAP’s First Shirley Walker Award

Wendy and Lisa, the musical duo formerly of Prince’s The Revolution band, received the inaugural Shirley Walker Award at the 29th ASCAP Film and Television Awards yesterday.

The 500,000-member American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers partly celebrated its 100th anniversary by saluting its female luminaries. The Shirley Walker Award was created and presented for the first time to honor the first prominent female film and TV composer. It is intended to recognize those “whose achievements have contributed to the diversity of film and television music.

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman were its first recipients. The award-winning collaborators, who first teamed up in the late 1980s, have contributed to Dangerous Minds, NBC’s Heroes, and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. For their work in the latter, they won an Emmy in 2010.
