On this weekend of the Golden Globes, where again not a single female has been nominated for best director, and as Academy Awards nominations open this Monday, January 7, Women and Hollywood and Women in Film LA are launching a joint social media campaign reminding voters and the public to consider women directors and their impressive feature films released this year – many to critical acclaim. The campaign runs from January 6-14, 2019.
The Academy has a historically low nomination rate for women in non-acting disciplines. Women represented only 23 percent of non-acting Oscar nominees in 2018, 20 percent in 2017, and 22 percent in 2016. In total, from 2006-2015, women accounted for just 19 percent of all non-acting nominations (Women’s Media Center). Only five women have been nominated for best director in the history of the awards. Only one has won.
There is no denying that 2018 was a golden year for female filmmakers, yet they continue to be overlooked for awards. We call on ally organizations, individuals, as well as the media to help amplify this campaign to – Remember the Ladies – and keep the names of women directors in the minds of voters.
The women directors included in the campaign are:
Susanne Bier – director – “Bird Box”
Anne Fletcher – director – “DUMPLIN’”
Debra Granik – co-writer and director – “Leave No Trace”
Marielle Heller – director – “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Tamara Jenkins – writer and director – “Private Life”
Karyn Kusama – director – “Destroyer”
Mimi Leder – director – “On the Basis of Sex”
Lynne Ramsay – writer and director – “You Were Never Really Here”
Josie Rourke – director – “Mary Queen of Scots”
Chloé Zhao – writer and director – “The Rider”
