Marja-Lewis Ryan to Serve as Showrunner on Showtime’s “The L Word” Sequel

Ryan: Showtime

The upcoming “L Word” sequel has found a showrunner. According to Deadline, Marja-Lewis Ryan (“The Four-Faced Liar”) will be steering Showtime’s continuation of the beloved series. She’ll also exec produce alongside the original series’ creator Ilene Chaiken and stars Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig, and Leisha Hailey (who portrayed Bette, Shane, and Alice, respectively).

“The L Word” ran on Showtime from 2004–2009. Set in West Hollywood, the drama followed a group of lesbians and is widely considered influential in its depiction of the LGBTQ community.

“Ilene and the original ‘L Word’ made me believe that my voice mattered,” said Ryan. “I am beyond excited for the opportunity to usher in the next generation of diverse queer people. I couldn’t imagine a better time to make this show.”

“Showtime met with a number of writers with ties to the lesbian community,” the source details.”The follow-up series is aimed at reflecting how members of that community’s relationships, their lives, and experiences have evolved and what has changed (and what hasn’t) since the show’s inception.” Viewers will be reunited with Bette, Shane, and Alice. The trio will “appear on the new series as their original characters as a point of connection from the prior series to the new one.”

Ryan is a playwright. She penned the script for “The Four-Faced Liar,” an award-winning adaptation of one of her plays. She has a number of films in the works, including “6 Balloons,” a drama about a woman who discovers her brother has relapsed on heroin, and the “Splash” reboot. She wrote and directed the former and wrote the screenplay for the latter.

Projects with female LGBTQ protagonists on the way include “Disobedience,” an adaptation of a Naomi Alderman novel starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, and a horror movie set in small-town America from “Mudbound” director Dee Rees.
