Fun Home is Coming to Broadway: The Graphic Memoir Turned Musical Aims to Open in Spring 2015

After a successful run at The Public Theatre, Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron’s musical reimagining of Fun Home is hopefully going to be ready for a Broadway debut next spring. Fun Home has already received a lot of critical acclaim; it was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and was awarded the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award for Best Musical, with Lucille Lortel acting awards going to both Michael Cerveris for Best Actor and Judy Kuhn for Outstanding Featured Actress.

Tesori and Kron are both former Tony nominees. Tesori’s composing work includes Caroline, or Change and Shrek. Kron, who is also an actress, wrote In the Wake and 2.5 Minute Ride.

The musical is based on Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Alison Bechdel’s bestselling and beloved graphic memoir. Fun Home chronicles Bechdel’s childhood and youth in rural Pennsylvania, focusing largely on her complicated relationship with her closeted father as well as her sexuality and sexual orientation. Even if you’re unfamiliar with Fun Home, you probably recognize Bechdel’s name — the Bechdel Test — originated in her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For.

Sam Gold directed the Off-Broadway production of Fun Home, while Beth Malone, Sydney Lucas, and Alexandra Socha played each played Alison at a different age.

Look for the musical to shake up the great white way in spring of 2015.
