Trailer Watch: Melissa McCarthy Is a Fugitive From Justice in Tammy

Melissa McCarthy’s much anticipated summer comedy Tammy will focus on a broke woman who discovers that her husband is cheating on her. She then embarks on an eventful and ill-fated road trip to Niagara Falls with her hard-drinking Grandma Pearl (played by Susan Sarandon).

The trailer depicts a hilarious fast-food caper set to Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise.” Rather than wearing a ski-mask, Tammy conceals her identity with an upside-down bag worn over her head with gloriously drawn-on eyebrows. We’re also shown Tammy being encouraged — nay, pressured — by her grandmother to drink and drive. The preview includes car chases, police officers, explosions, and an interesting approach to riding a Sea-Doo — it seems like Tammy is going to be pretty action-packed.

McCarthy has a proven track record of embodying outrageous and hilarious characters while maintaining a strong sense of realism and humanity. The film features an excellent ensemble cast comprised mostly of women, including Sarandon, Allison Janney, Toni Collette, Sandra Oh, and Kathy Bates. McCarthy rose to superstardom after her performance in Bridesmaids, and continued to dominate the box office in The Heat with Sandra Bullock: it’s nice to see her in another picture focused on female characters.

In addition to starring in the film, McCarthy co-wrote the script with Ben Falcone, Tammy’s director and McCarthy’s real-life husband. The two had (expectedly) great chemistry in Bridesmaids, so it’s great that they are teaming up professionally both behind the scenes and onscreen (Falcon has a role in Tammy.)

Tammy will open in theatres July 2.
