Issa López Is Writing and Directing a Revenge Thriller for Legendary

López: Sector Cine/YouTube

Mexican filmmaker Issa López is set to write and direct another supernatural story. The “Tigers Are Not Afraid” helmer is teaming up with Legendary for an untitled feature. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.

Said to be a revenge thriller “rooted in Mexican cultural lore,” details about the project are scarce. Sherry Marsh (“Vikings,” “Pose”) is among its producers.

As the source details, López is well-known in Mexico, and had a hit with “Casi Divas,” or “Road to Fame,” a 2008 comedy about four women from around the country participating in a nationwide talent search. Internationally, Lopez is perhaps best known for 2017’s “Tigers Are Not Afraid,” winner of  best horror director award at Fantastic Fest. The dark fairy tale about ghosts that haunt the children who survive Mexico’s drug war won over 50 awards around the world.

Back in 2018 it was reported that López would be making her English-language debut with Paramount Players’ love story “Three Sundays.” No word on the status of the pic, which is set in the banda music scene in New York.

“Go for the stories that matter to you,” López said when asked what advice she’d give other female filmmakers. “That’s what made a [difference] with me. If you are speaking from a place of absolute honesty, you are going to be heard, eventually.” She explained, “It takes such a stubbornness, [and] you have to keep on pushing and trying and knocking on the door and then kicking it until someone gives up and goes ‘okay send it to me.’ If it’s not completely honest, and you aren’t completely crazy about that story, if it’s done to achieve something else, it’s probably not going to take you where you actually want to go. The truth is, where do you want to go with it? Where do you really want to go with this? It has to come from the soul.”
