Thanks to Tiffany Haddish, we’ll never look at grapefruits the same way. The hilarious “Girls Trip” breakout is riding the momentum of the box office hit and is in talks to join New Line’s comic adaptation “The Kitchen” and has signed on to topline Universal’s comedy “The Temp.” Variety broke the news.
Set in Hell’s Kitchen, New York in the 1970s, “The Kitchen” centers on the Irish mob. After the FBI does a sweep and arrests several men, their wives take over the business. The project marks Oscar-nominated screenwriter Andrea Berloff’s directorial debut. The “Straight Outta Compton” writer is also penning the script.
“The Temp” will be written by Dana Fox. No details about the plot have been released. Fox’s credits include “How to Be Single,” “Couples Retreat,” and “The Wedding Date.” She co-wrote Rebel Wilson-starrer “Isn’t It Romantic,” an upcoming romantic comedy about a woman who is skeptical about romance and love.
“Girls Trip” grossed over $137 million on a budget of $19 million, and there’s been chatter that Haddish’s supporting role in the comedy could earn her awards attention.
“The Carmichael Show,” “Keanu,” and “If Loving You is Wrong” are among Haddish’s previous credits. She recently made history as the first black female stand-up comedian to host “Saturday Night Live.” Her first book, “The Last Black Unicorn,” will hit shelves December 5. The collection of essays touches on her experiences growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles, her gigs as a school mascot and Bar Mitzvah hype woman, and navigating fame.
