Pic of the Day: Emma Thompson Continues Her Campaign Against Heels

It hasn’t been Emma Thompson’s year.

Despite being feted by Meryl Streep early this awards season for her performance in Saving Mr. Banks, Thompson was snubbed for an Oscar nomination and has been largely steamrolled (along with every other Best Actress nominee) by avid prize-collector Cate Blanchett (who was admittedly fantastic in Blue Jasmine).

The wonderfully outspoken actress and screenwriter hasn’t let her less-than-ideal award season get her down, though. She’s even made headlines with her newest campaign — against high heels.

It all started at the National Board of Review awards ceremony, when Thompson took the stage after winning the Best Actress trophy and announced, “I’ve taken my heels off as a feminist statement really, because why do we wear them? They’re so painful. And pointless, really. You know, I really would like to urge everyone to stop it. Just stop it. Don’t wear them anymore. You just can’t walk in them, and I’m so comfortable now.”

Then, at the Golden Globes, Thompson took to heart Tina Fey’s recommendation of “Ladies, kick off your shoes,” and tossed them behind her when she came up to the podium.

At the SAG Awards this weekend, Thompson simply showed up in flat sandals (pictured above). Frankly, we never understood why a woman can’t be seen as “formal” or “accomplished” without being in foot pain.

Viva Emma’s Revolution!
