The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have released their list of films eligible for the 2014 Oscars, and of the 289 films that qualified for Oscar consideration, a paltry 25, or 8.6%, were from female filmmakers. (This does not include the Academy Awards’ documentary category, where women made up a third of the shortlist.) The 8.6% figure simply reflects the status quo, where only about 9% of American films are made by women.

At this juncture, the likeliest Oscar bet on a woman director is Jennifer Lee’s Frozen. Of the women-directed films, Enough Said is arguably the biggest recipient of critical praise, but the Academy has never shown Nicole Holofcener any love.

To qualify for the 86th Academy Awards, a film must be exhibited for at least seven days in a Los Angeles County theater by the end of the year and last longer than 40 minutes.
