Two Women Directors Nominated for Oscars’ Live-Action Short Category

The ten preliminary nominees for the Oscars’ live-action shorts category have been announced. Among the ten directors on the long list, two were women: Miranda de Pencier and Selma Vilhunen.

Notably, both short films centered on female protagonists.

The Canadian de Pencier’s Throat Song directed by Miranda de Pencier features an Inuit woman (Ippiksaut Friesen) who decides to leave her abusive husband after realizing she is far from the only victim of domestic violence in her community, while the Finnish Vilhunen’s Do I Have to Take Care of Everything? directed by Selma Vilhunen concerns an overly busy mom (Joanna Haartti) struggling to care for her unruly family one chaotic morning.

Between three and five of the ten will be included on the final nomination list which will be released in January.
