Teenage girls of the future continue to get the raw deal in Divergent, the big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling YA trilogy. Shailene Woodley plays Tris, a “divergent” who fails to conform to any of the five factions her world is divided into. Leaving behind her family, she elects to become a member of the “Dauntless” tribe — the most elite of the five factions, but also the most dangerous. Then she discovers an underground plan to overthrow evil leader Kate Winslet’s rule and destroy the strict hierarchy governing society.
Between its dystopian setting, its blockbuster success as a YA series, its admirable yet interesting female protagonist, and the continued ascent of ingenue-turned-star Shailene Woodley, Divergent sounds like — and is desperately trying to be — the next Hunger Games. The idea of two concurrent action franchises headlined by women sounds almost too good to be true. Our fingers are crossed.
Divergent will be released in March 2014.
