Today in “duh tinged with schadenfreude,” Shonda Rhimes reveals that gray-haired male ABC execs have no idea what women are like or what they want to watch. In an interview to NPR, Rhimes said,
A bunch of older guys told me that nobody was going to watch a show about a woman who had casual sex and threw a guy out the night before her first day of work — that that was completely unrealistic and that nobody wanted to know that woman…. I remember sitting in that meeting and thinking, “Wow they don’t know anything about what’s going on in the world right now.” [emphasis added]
Slate reminded us that that show, Grey’s Anatomy, is currently in its tenth season, and that those “the ‘older guys’ who doubted Rhimes no longer work for the network.” ABC knew to get out of Rhimes’ way when she later pitched Scandal, currently one of the network’s most popular shows.
